Abstract: | The inadequacy of ordinary explanations of innovation under the new industrial and technological conditions is analyzed. An alternative explanation is proposed. It is shown that the Schumpeterian model of the entrepreneur and the model of the integration of the innovation processes in big firms both have a linear and individualized view of invention. It is proven that local analyses do not satisfactorily explain the successful, synergetic concentration of high technology industries in certain regions. Following an examination of the new conditions in this branch of industry, a nonlinear conception is proposed of technological innovation as being inseparable from social innovation, i.e. from the capacity to adopt new forms of cooperation. |
