Abstract:A recent survey of informed expert opinion is described which addressed the important social implications of information technology. Respondents provided their judgements, not only on the scale of change to be anticipated, but also on the factors that they believed would underlie the trends. One aim of the study is to determine how far apparent agreements in views stated qualitatively actually mask substantial differences in the amount of change that is anticipated in quantitative terms. The survey yields interesting data on expectations as to social and technological changes. Despite its limitations, the outlined approach provides a useful input into larger forecasting exercise.
