Abstract:The entry of expert systems into the business arena has bought with it new set of terms and concepts to explain the technology and how it works. As with most attempts to define technologies, however, the new terminology tends to mystify rather than explain confounding all but the most dedicated followers. Although the business strategist needs only to understand what expert systems are capable of, rather than how they actually do it, a basic grasp of the fundamentals can facilitate the identification and investigation of potential applications. Expert systems comprise three main components: knowledge base; inference engine; and interface.
