Abstract:The purpose of the study is to provide the first relatively comprehensive test of propositions derived from Steers and Mowday's model. The study was conducted by mailed survey at a major financial institution. A single-item supervisory rating of overall job performance was available from their company personnel records. Nine months after administration of the survey, the firm generated a list of persons who had left the organization and their reasons for leaving. Results indicate that met expectations, job values, job attitudes, intention to leave the organization, and actual leaving were related to many, though not all, theorized antecedent variables. Despite the unavoidable problems, the study strengthens general confidence in the model.
