Abstract:Packaged software and tailor-made applications are compared. The growing packaged software market in Japan is characterized. The software development practice of the large Japanese software houses is described. Software developers are getting more expensive, mainly due to the programmer shortage. Even a large increase in mainframers' efforts to come up with new software products isn't likely to satisfy demand. Foreign software houses are gaining ground. Japanese experts forecast that foreign packages won't do because of differences in management structures and mind-sets. Most agree that conditions are right for an explosion of packaged software use in Japan. Whether that explosion occurs soon will depend mainly on the efforts of the software vendors.
