Abstract:Linear compensatory models are widely believed to be capable of mimicking a wide range of functional forms, including noncompensatory heuristics. But this robustness to misspecification of functional form may fail when there are negative correlations among attributes in a choice set. Two laboratory experiments evaluate the extent to which such model failure might arise in natural contexts.
