Abstract:Can business planning be improved if more attention is paid to underlying political cycles? Practitioner and researcher perspectives are compared on this issue. While practitioners stand to gain useful insights from a careful examination of past political cycles, these insights may be disconfirmed by rigorous tests carried out by researchers. Regularities in economic conditions that are supposed to coincide with national election results are examined. Five hypotheses from the literature on the political-economic cycle are investigated. The decision maker might take the relationships explored into account in making recommendations regarding planning. Some results of empirical tests are sumarized.
