Abstract:Recent developments in information technology have enabled executives to use automated systems for strategic planning. One such class of automated support, the Group Decision Support System, is currently being used by several companies in various phases of the planning process. A discussion of the technology and its use is provided. It is shown how it can be applied to four common planning problems: inappropriate organizational climate, lack of understanding, lack of participation, and lack of communication. The Group Decision Support System is an interactive computer-based system designed to assist groups in the formulation and solution of unstructured problems. Two examples are described and analyzed.
