Abstract:In 1987, foreign owned enterprises (FOEs) accounted for 17,9 p.c. of gross value added in UK manufacturing, but only 12,8 p.c. of employment. Defining productivity as gross value added per person employed, this means that FOEs had a 48,6 p.c. productivity advantage over domestically owned enterprises (DOEs). It attempts to quantify the extent to which this aggregate productivity advantage is due to a better industrial distribution (the structural effect) and to show how much it reflects a widespread tendency for FOEs to be more productive than their DOE counterparts within each industry (the ownership effect).
