Abstract:The information technology revolution is often said to have made industrial bureaucracies obsolete. It has also been argued that the post-war boom in IT has facilitated the growth of knowledge work at the same time as blue-collar employment has fallen. It has been predicted that the ongoing changes will reduce the number of hierarchical positions and make organizations increasingly lean and inner-directed, thereby creating more space for decision making on the shop-floor level. Contrary to most expectations, however, there has not been seen a decline in supervisory positions in Finland.
