Abstract: | The flow of ideas out of universities into British industry is still modest, but it is growing. Electronics, micro-biology, telecommunications produce dozens of small young companies struggling to establish themselves and get into world markets. One of them, Psion is proceeding strongly past the most vulnerable stages. Psion was founded by an academic, D. poteer, its main product is the Organiser, a hand-held computer. The expected turnover is around 30 million UK pounds this year, and apart from the vagaries of the microelectronics market, the major question is how smoothly it can evolve out of the entrepreneurial stage into a professionally managed big company. |
