Abstract:New trends and developments in the management of education are revealed. The conclusions of discussions with senior officers in a number of Local Education Authorities are reported. The authorities were chosen because they have been positively seeking to manage change in a style which may be described as the management of excellence. Excellent organizations stress the importance of service, to the client and the community. The management style of excellent organizations facilitates such values by believing in their staff, encouraging autonomy and entrepreneurship and developing "lean" team structures. The cultural background and management principles of excellence are examined.
