Abstract:Joint business venture as a popular strategy for organizational growth and transformation is characterized. It is shown that there is an inherent fragility in joint venture agreements that makes them complex to manage. A longitudinal study of a domestic joint venture between two computer services firms is reported. This alliance proved to be unsuccessful. After a short smoothly completed period, "we" versus "they" stereotypes began to permeate much of the interaction between the employee groups. The focus on internal pitfalls as the underlying reasons why this joint venture ended in failure does not mean that the legal and technical aspects of such ventures are insignificant.
