Abstract:Investing in small, technically advanced firms has primarily been the strategy of established computer companies. The main reasons are the high cost of capital required to fund a start-up and the pace of innovation in the industry. But the strategy is spreading. The principles involved - combining the liquidity and staying power of a large company with the flexibility and creativity of a small one - are broadly applicable and may present a new solution to global competitiveness.
