Abstract: | The first fruits of the UK government's privatisation policy for the electricity supply industry are ripening. Now each of the 12 regional electricity companies is free, in theory, to compete for any business anywhere in the country, requiring 1 MW. However, electricity utilities represent an uneasy compromise between the interests of individual consumers, the public at large, the government, the distributors, the generators etc. Large volume users, like British Steel and ICI, have complained that so far the market mechanism has not proved effective. It seems that the government has achieved its aim of dropping a large stone into a once placid pool, whatever the trend for electricity prices will be. |
