Abstract:To date, popular debate about Eastern Europe has focused on macroeconomic issues and the role of the public sector. This article, in contrast, focuses on the implications of events in Eastern Europe for the private sector. The real questions facing business are: what are the opportunities and threats that follow from the opening-up of Eastern Europe? And how should the private sector respond? A broad-brush situational analysis suggests that, on balance, the prospects are good both for resource-seekers and for market-seekers.
