Abstract:This article studies the differences in the enforcement of employment protection legislation (EPL) between countries. The authors develop a model and then empirically examine the effects of EPL on dismissal probabilities and on the equilibrium size distribution of companies. The results are in line with the predictions from the model, and show that workers under permanent contracts in companies with less restrictive EPL are more likely to be dismissed.
