Abstract: | The prospects of industrialization through flexible automation are examined. The problem of how flexible automation can help in going beyond Fordism is investigated. The historical, geographical and economic attributes of the emergence of a "Third Italy" within the North-East and Central regions are described and analyzed: its programmed de-industrialization by the central government, its competent and determined work-force, its scope for free entreprise, and the support given to its small businesses by local authorities. The question whether too broadly defined models which could include Japanese and German solutions as well, are appropriate tools of transcending Fordism is addressed. |
