Abstract: | The Japanese production and management system, which has been heavily influenced by Toyota, became famous worldwide during the discussion of 'lean production' and 'lean manage- ment'. This article identifies and evaluates some recent modifications in the Japanese automobile industry and its influence on the production and management system. First, a brief description of 'Toyotism' and its elements will be given. It will be followed by an analysis of changes in the Japanese labor market which may be the cause for the aforementioned modifications. In this context, changes of norms and values in the Japanese society will be considered as crucial. In order to give a thorough analysis and under- standing of the recent changes, Toyota's and Nissan's newest factories will be closely examined and put into the per- spective of industry-wide changes. |
