Abstract:Anthropologists tell a story of war and survival among primates. In the battle for territorial supremacy, one group of apes forces another into the trees. The dominant apes who take over the land later succumb to the disease that takes root on the land while the arboreal apes find safety in the trees and survive. As this story suggests, wars for territory and for survival predate human communities, and determination of the winners and losers is neither quick nor obvious.
