Abstract:The paper first analyses the basic characteristics, costs and benefits of the EMU, next discusses the alternative mechanisms or balance of payments adjustments, which come into play when a member country has to give up its exchange rate policy, and finally reviews the fulfillment of the Maastricht convergence criteria, which were set as a precondition for the transition to the EMU.At the moment Slovenia meets two out of the five of these criteria and is, therefore, apparently in a better position than some of the EC countries, which meet none of the criteria. The picture might be misleading, since Slovenia is far from fulfilling the monetary criteria (inflation rate, stability of the exchange rate), which are the most important and is, as such, far from meeting the conditions for joining the EMU.
