Abstract:In this article the author describes the changes in international finance, which influence banking operations and have brought about major modifications in the financial systems of developed countries. In this respect the author focuses primarily on the features of the so called, financial revolutions and numerous technological innovations in the field of finance. One of the key findings by the author is that the international environment, in which banks operate, has changed substantially , and this demands a certain Ievel of adjustment from the side of banks.Their market share is taken by old so called non-banking institutions such as private pension funds, state and local pension funds, life and property insurance companies and above alI certain new institutions, i.e. investment funds. It is characteristic that the return on capital in commercial banks is stagnating, whereas during the last fifteen years the "securities industry" has enjoyed a return of capital twice as high as before. In spite of this trend banks continue to be the most important financial intermediaries; traditional instruments of bank financing continue to be better represented than others. The fact is that only big, well known companies enjoying high ratings, are in a position to finance their activities by issuing securities, whereas smaller companies and individuals continue to be directed to banks and bank loans.
