Abstract: | The preparation of the new banking law means a step ahead in the development of the Slovene banking system. Its present characteristics are relative under-development, closeness, regional and market concentration and too many banks.Current trends in the banking industry in the world should be taken into account when preparing a new Slovene legislation. The winning banking strategy thus includes maximisation of noninterest incomes, marketing of financial services, management of financial risks and control of costs. The working draft of the new Slovene banking law, which seems to be substantially larger than the present law, gives a foundation for normal banking with special emphasis on prudential regulation and supervision.Open questions to be solved include issues such as capital adequancy requirements, privatization and proper ownership structure of banks in Slovenia, market structure (concentration), interest rate policy as well as deposit insurance scheme. |
