Abstract:Banks may have foreign currency assets and liabilities. In this case we talk about foreign currency position, which may be closed or open.If open, it may be either long, providing foreign currency assets exceed foreign currency liabilities, or short, providing the situation is reverse.Open currency position means that banks are exposed to exchange rate risk. For banks in Slovenia foreign currency position is much more important for two reasons. In the first place, they have quite a lot of assets and liabilities in foreign currency. In the second place, they have assets and liabilities with foreign money serving as a unit of account. Therefore, they should be required to take special care of their currency position when foreign money is used as a unit of account.
