Abstract:The government sector of the Swiss domestic fixed-income market remains small, although the proportion of new issuance by the government has increased dramatically over the past four years, climbing from a meagre 7.4% in 1990 to over 33% last year. By the end of 1993, the federal government was in debt to the tune of Swfr70 billion, up from Swfr55 billion in 1992. Government bond issuance has risen as the Swiss authorities have started to run budget deficits again over the past three years.
