Abstract:This article examines the complex inter-relations btw. ethnic residential segregation (hereafter as: e-r-s.), inter-ethnic (here as: i-e.) social (as: soc.) contacts and attitudes toward minorities within the context of European societies. The following hypotheses are particularly dealt with: 1. e-r-s. restricts opportunities for establishment and development of i-e. soc. contacts, 2. positive i-e. contacts are likely to reduce anti-minority (as: a-m.) attitudes, and 3. contact mediates the relations btw. the ethnic composition of neighbourhood of residence and a-m. attitudes.
Using data from the 2003 European Social Survey for 21 European countries a series of multi-level regression models are estimated to examine the hypotheses within a cross-national comparative framework. Despite the findings generally supporting the theoretical expectations, also underlined are the complex ways of e-r-s. patterns affecting attitudes toward minority populations through i-e. contacts.
