| Abstract: | The three "pillars" of the Japanese system of industrial relations (life-long employment, wages according to seniority, and company unions) are described. Their historical origins and transformation are investigated. This serves as a basis both for criticizing the culturalist interpretation of them and to highlight the logics that link them to form a system which combines practice and ideology. The new requirements of Japanese industrial development and modernization regarding the educational system, management practices and industrial relations are briefly reviewed. |
