Abstract:The world's view of the former Soviet Union since its disintegration in late 1991 has been shaped largely by media coverage of Russia's troubled political landscape: attempted coups, tanks on red Square, inflammatory nationalistic rhetoric of Vladimir Zhirinovsky, and general uncertainty. To the outsider, chaos seems to reign. Yet economic progress has been made in the last three years. Behind this chaotic democracy lie strong roots for enormous growth in its fledgling financial markets.
