Abstract:The first important attempt to liberalise financial markets in Argentina took place between 1977 and 1981 and ended in a complete failure. Throughout the eighties the degree of "financial repression" oscillated, but interest rates remained basically market-determined. However, the financial system continued to experience significant distortions, mainly due to the extreme volatility of the macroeconomic environment. The authors focus their analysis on the specific ways in which a Currency Board arrangement shapes the links between the macroeconomic environment and the financial system.
