Abstract: | The UK manufacturing market has experienced an acceleration in the net loss of jobs, but with a variation in the decline across industries; and a deterioration in the relative position of unskilled, blue-collar workers in employment and earnings. Accelerating productivity growth with a slow growth in output resulted in employment cuts across most industries. Skill-biased technological change means that a disproportionate share of the jobs lost were for unskilled workers. globalisation through trade and FDI has stimulated produtivity change, and empirical evidence suggest that increased import penetration has stimulated an important defensive response from UK industry. |
