Abstract:To increase competitiveness manufacturing enterprises have adopted practices such as advanced manufacturing technology, total quality management, just-in-time inventory control, job enrichment, and skills enhancement. The practices are divided into two classes: the first three belong to integrated manufacturing (IM) and the other two to the notion of empowerment (hereafter as: emp.). Using a study of 80 manufacturing companies this article examines three assumptions made in literature: firstly, IM will affect emp.. Secondly, company performance will be enhanced by IM and emp., and thirdly, there is synergy between constituent practices of IM and emp.
