Abstract:The possible effects of privatization policy are examined considering the market structure in which a firm operates and in particular the relationship between ownership and market structure. It is shown that privatization can lead to lower profit if the firm operates in a duopolistic market. This result holds even if nationalization is associated with some degree of inefficiency. The degree of nationalization also affects the interaction between an incumbent firm and a potential entrant. It is shown that a firm may not be a natural monopoly while being privatized but that alteration of its ownership status may affect the market structure in which firms operate.
