Abstract:Following several significant corporate scandals, the board of directors has gained a pivotal position in the corporate governance debate. However, due to an overreliance on particular methodological and theoretical research fortresses in past research, academic knowledge of how this important mechanism operates and functions remains limited. This paper aims to contribute to the promising stream of research focusing on behavioral corporate board perspectives and processes, by delving into board leadership: an area perhaps most plagued by the predominant approaches. Adopting a team perspective on the board of directors our study goes beyond traditional board leadership research, which hasn't perceived the actual leadership dynamics, by examining leadership processes and behaviors in the board team. We develop a conceptual framework addressing a novel and ethical approach to team leadership within the board, which has been verified to yield benefits in various other team settings.
