Abstract:Banks across the world are in trouble. Growing financial markets that eat into a bank's business and the present overabundance of capital are among other problems. What is to be done? This article tries to answer this question. Most fundamentally, the government and the public must acknowledge that overcapacity is the central issue. The author has two policy recommendations. Sick banks must be reduced. Healthy banks should be allowed to broaden their increasingly narrow business definition.
