| Abstract: | This article examines the use of fines and imprisonment sentences when the wealth of the offender is unobservable to the enforcement authority. The author develops a model with two types of offenders, high-wealth type and low-wealth type. The results of the study suggest that a relatively high imprisonment sentence must be accompanied by a low fine, so that high-wealth offenders will prefer to pay higher fine and bear a lower imprisonment sentence. |
