Abstract:Obtaining reliable and valid pay information is critical to answering some real business concerns and ultimately developing a compensation program that supports corporate goals. Too often, however, companies don't know how to compare their pay practices to the labour market. The process does not have to be mysterious if the basic criteria in selecting and evaluating salary surveys is understood. A flexible but reliable data gathering system is presented. A questioning strategy is outlined. It is shown how to conduct a customized survey by telephone. Several ways to obtain third-party surveys are highlighted. To make sure that survey meets the company's needs, co-operation with the organization conducting the survey is suggested.
