Abstract:Nordstrom has built a 59-store retail empire on a foundation of extraordinary customer service - at a great cost in troubles. Union allegiations that the company's pay practices are unfair have resulted in a five-part order against the store by the state of Washington, pending lawsuits by company shareholders and employees, and recent union-busting charges by the National Labor Relations Board. The Nordstrom story is reported beginning from the 1880s when young J. W. Nordstrom left Sweden. The investigation of Department of Labor and Industries was conducted in 1990. As soon as the DLI report was issued, the company quickly tried to repair its once pristine image. A number of measures are shortly reviewed.
