Abstract:Participation, as a philosophy and as an underlying mechanism, is important to many work redesign approaches and initiatives. Within ergonomics it is especially relevant. With particular reference to physical workplace design, the notion of participation is closely and critically examined. Many forms of participation are described and analyzed. Some methods of workplace specification are mentioned. Requirements for proper and successful workplace design are identified. Both strong and weak points - advantages and disadvantages - of participation are analyzed. It is shown that the very process of participation may have systemic effects.
