Abstract:The application of recently developed statistical procedures for partially ordering Lorentz curves is found to be a powerful tool in evaluating income inequality. Using microdata for nine countries from the Luxembourg Income Study, the decile Lorenz ordinates and their variances are estimated and pairwise statistical tests for Lorenz dominance are made. In most cases, differences in the definition of the recipient unit make little difference in the rankings. Irrespective of the recipient unit, the countries with most equal distribution of income are Sweden, Norway and Germany, and those with the greatest inequality include the United States and Switzerland.
