Abstract: | The relationship between market structure and R and D competition when there is a series of innovative opportunities over time. A simple duopoly model is proposed,in which the question of how market structure evolves when there is a sequence of opportunities to innovate, depends upon the nature of product market behavior. In the model highly competitive product market behavior leads to increasing dominance, whereas Cournot behavior may lead to action-reaction. The model is intended only as a preliminary step in the analysis of innovation and the evolution of market structure. |
