Abstract:The myth of Dracula is one of the main reasons why tourists have traveled to Romania. The purpose of this paper is to describe the role of the Romanian state in providing a framework for development of tourism over the past four decades. The historical review draws mainly upon interviews with a number of former tourism employees and published sources from the socialist era and covers both socialist and post-socialist contexts. The Dracula tourism example shows how stereotyped images at the same time open up opportunities and create unwelcome associations for the state.
