Abstract:There are several traps to avoid when trying to force people into sharing knowledge, promoting ideas, and getting experiences and reports down on paper. This article presents the seven common syndromes standing in the way of effective knowledge management (KM). Many of them will be recognizable in some way at your own organization: 1. tall poppy, 2. shrinking violet, 3. on the Web, 4. communities of practically everything, 5. not invented here, 6. ignorance is bliss, and 7. tom tom. As with any syndrome, the first step is to acknowledge it. Start the conversation with your leadership team members and see what syndromes can be identified.
