Abstract:This article investigates the effects of subjectively experienced subgroups in a team. Two factors that can explain the consequences of subgroup perceptions in teams are suggested: affective and cognitive integration. This is tested by using 64 MBA project teams. It is found that cognitive integration moderates the effect of subgroup formation on team effectiveness, while affective integration mediates the decrease that subgroup formation has on team satisfaction.
