Abstract:Hungary has maintained an admirable political stability since 1990 when it became the first country in post-communist east and central Europe to hold democratically free elections. In the general election in May former communists leading the revamped Socialist Party were swept back to power with an overwhelming majority. Some Hungarians claim the results marked a revolt against market economy. Rather than heralding any backsliding, the return of former communists to electoral legitimacy in Hungary may be opening anew and more mature phase in the country's democratic evolution.
