Abstract:The end of communism and the declining attraction of even the mildest form of central economic planning have not resulted in in a significant increase in the appeal of market systems or, more important, any greater understanding of how they operate or the mechanisms that drive them. There are, in fact, subtler and perhaps even more dangerous threats to the integrity of the market system than the bludgeon of socialism. In recent times, the legal system has been used to "improve" on competition and to impose impossibly high safety standards. This will lead to long-term damage to liberty and prosperity.
