Abstract:One of the greatest risks to your business is the insidious growth of internet and email abuse. The paper answers the question how far can one go when trying to ferret out prohibited behaviour. A recent survey commissioned by Klegal and Personnel Today shows that employers took disciplinary action on more occasions in the past year against staff for misusing the web than for dishonesty, violence, and health and safety breaches combined. The survey of 212 employers found that there were 358 disciplinary cases for internet and email use compared to a combined total of 326 cases for the other three categories above. Sending pornographic emails emerged as one of the top three ways of getting sacked. Nearly 40% of disciplinary action involving pornographic email resulted in dismissal.
