Abstract:This paper investigates the image of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) as a holiday destination. The countries have similarities. They have had communist governments and they have been inaccessible to tourists from outside the communist bloc. These countries are now seeking new tourist markets. This paper examines the views of a number of UK residents about destination image of CEE. Through semi-structured interviews, this study examines images held by people who have and who have not visited CEE. There were few differences found between visitors and non-visitors. Most of the views were positive and associated favourably with culture. Negative images were usually associated with the eastern part of the area.
