Abstract:This paper examines the history and development of tourist art and souvenirs (henceforth as: svnrs). The reception of artefacts (as: a-fcts.), alongside works of fine art, within the museogallery system is discussed: the relationship btw. cultural tourism and anthropology, identification of common links btw. ethnographic a-fcts., works of fine art and svnrs. gathered in Australia during the 20th century. This research takes as its priority the formal qualities of the a-fcts. and charts the transition of the boomerang, among other Aboriginal a-fcts., from functional tool designed for hunting, to a marker of people and place made for sale as a tourist commodity.
