| Abstract: | Both managers and researchers use widely the notion of professionalization. This paper reviews a book published in 1988 under the title "The System of Professions" by A. Abbott. Despite having had a strong impact in the field of the sociology of professions, this book has remained unknown by many management science researchers. The book's pragmatic approach to the concepts of profession and professionalization helps achieve better understanding of work structuring, thus possibly being useful to deal with issues like human resources management (HRM), organizational control or also the management of information systems, as well. |
