Abstract:The past few years were characterized by low or negative economic growth rates, high inflation rates, volatile exchange rates and staggering indebtedness in Latin America. Nevertheless, largest banks have suffered lesser losses than earlier. Moreover, more banks improved positions and the biggest banks succeeded to raise their capital/ asset ratios. Unfavorable exchange rates hit Venezuelan, Mexican and Equadorian banks but favored Brazilian ones. The number of mergers was smaller than a year earlier.
